Former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has been granted temporary bail from the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC). The development is to enable him to attend the funeral rites of his mother, Hajiya Umma El-Rufai, who reportedly died in Cairo, Egypt, on Friday. An aide to the former governor confirmed that the release was approved on compassionate grounds following the family’s loss. Reacting to the development, his son, Bashir El-Rufai, disclosed in a post on his X (formerly Twitter) handle that his father had been released from detention. He wrote: “My beloved great legend of a father (@elrufai) is being released from his unlawful and illegal detention at the hands of one of the most corrupt agencies in the Federal Republic of Nigeria, that is a lame excuse of a pathetic institution. The Deputy Governor of Kano State, Aminu Abdussalam, has resigned from office. His resignation was announced in a statement released on Friday, March 27, by the spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya movement, Dr. Habibu Sale Mohammed. “The Kwankwasiyya Movement wishes to formally inform the general public, the good people of Kano State, and the entire nation that the Deputy Governor of Kano State has tendered his resignation from office,” the statement said. The movement clarified that the resignation does not amount to an admission of the allegations raised against him by the state assembly. The state House of Assembly had on March 5th served an impeachment notice on Abdulsalam. The impeachement notice was served to him after he declined to defect from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) just like his principal, Governor Abba Yusuf, in January. The assembly initiated the impeachment proceedings over allegations of gross misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust made against Mr Abdulsalam. The action followed a petition submitted by the Executive against Abdulsalam over alleged irregularities during his tenure as Commissioner for Local Government Affairs between 2023 and 2024. “For the avoidance of doubt, this resignation does not in any way constitute an admission of the allegations raised against him by the Kano State House of Assembly. The Deputy Governor maintains his innocence and firmly believes that his records in office and public service remain a testament to his integrity and commitment to the people,”the statement from Kwankwasiyya said

A 30-year-old officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Wofai Benson Akpama, has been found dead in his apartment in Calabar, the capital of Cross River State.Akpama was discovered lifeless in his room at No. 34 Mbora Street, Etta-Agbor, within Calabar Municipality.A source, who identified herself as Joy Benson of Holland Street, told journalists on Tuesday that she reported the incident to the police on Friday after discovering what she described as a sudden and unnatural death.“I informed the police about the sudden and unnatural death on Friday. Immediately, the police visited the scene, where the remains were observed,” she said.Police sources disclosed that no visible marks of violence were found on the body and that no foul play was initially suspected.The corpse was later evacuated to the University of Calabar Teaching Hospital for preservation and autopsy.Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, ASP Sunday Eitokpah, told PUNCH Metro that the matter was under investigation.“The case was reported to us last week. We have yet to identify any suspect, but an investigation is ongoing,” he said.

A 43-year-old man, Lateef Suleiman, has allegedly killed his elder brother, Mustapha Amidu, 52, in Sepeteri, Oyo State, after accusing him of shooting him in a dream.The Oyo State Police Command confirmed the incident in a statement, saying, “The Oyo State Police Command wishes to inform the general public of a tragic incident reported at the Ago-Amodu Divisional Police Headquarters, Sepeteri.”According to the statement issued by the command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Olayinka Ayanlade: “One Badmus Yunisa ‘m’ of Alegunlode Compound, Sepeteri, reported that Lateef Suleiman ‘m’, aged 43 years, attacked his elder brother, Mustapha Amidu ‘m’, aged 52 years, following an accusation that the deceased had shot him in a dream while he was asleep the previous night.”The police added, “Acting on this claim, the suspect allegedly approached the deceased where he was seated, picked up a heavy rock, struck him on the head, and fled the scene immediately.”The victim was rushed to Ileri Oluwa Hospital, Sepeteri, where he “was confirmed dead by the medical doctor on duty,” the statement said.It further noted: “Upon receipt of the report, a team of police operatives led by the divisional police officer, Ago-Amodu Division, visited both the scene of the incident and the hospital as part of preliminary investigative procedures.”Confirming the arrest, the Command stated, “The suspect has since been arrested, has confessed to the crime, and is currently cooperating with investigators.”The Commissioner of Police, CP Femi Haruna, has “directed that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for discreet and comprehensive investigation,” the statement said.The command assured the public that “justice will be pursued diligently and in accordance with the law.”“For emergencies, members of the public are advised to contact the Oyo State Call Response Center toll-free line on 615 or the Oyo State Police Command Control Room on 08081768614 and 07055495413,” the statement said.

A chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Dele Momodu, has said the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is unsettled by the growing strength of the opposition across the country.Momodu made the claim on Wednesday during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily.According to him, recent political developments show that the opposition is gaining ground and putting pressure on the federal government.“Opposition is gathering momentum and you can see that even the government is jittery, forget about their propaganda,” he said.He added, “It is obvious the ruling party is jittery, and that is why they are going all out, frenetically, to try to showcase and pretend that all is well.”Momodu argued that the ruling party is battling internal crises in several states, insisting that the situation contradicts public claims of unity within the party.“But if you read the news today, you will see that the APC is indeed a house of commotion. From Benue State to Zamfara State and so many other places, they are fighting themselves like babies fighting for lollipops,” he said.The ADC chieftain also criticised the wave of defections into the ruling party, claiming that many of those moving to the APC are doing so out of fear rather than conviction.“Everybody that goes to the APC now is going there for various reasons,” he said.“If you are a governor, you are afraid for your second term. If you are a governor, you are afraid of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission. If you are a governor, you are afraid of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission.”Momodu further alleged that some governors are driven by fear of political and legal pressure.“If you are a governor, you are afraid of so many things, including your own shadow,” he said.He described the situation as one in which political office holders feel compelled to submit themselves to the ruling party.“A governor will voluntarily go into slavery and servitude because they know the leadership they are dealing with is not a regular leadership; it is not Goodluck Jonathan,” Momodu added.He maintained that the current political climate reflects growing tension within the ruling party as the opposition reorganises ahead of the 2027 electoral contests.
